I hope all is well with you down in Florida these days. There’s not much new with me besides working at Wrigley Field and covering high school sports in the Chicago area to stay busy. There is plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.

Lions in Action in CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying

Orlando City goalkeeper Pedro Gallese and midfielder Wilder Cartagena both started for Peru in its 1-0 loss to Brazil. It looked as if Gallese would earn a clean sheet, but Neymar found Marquinhos on a corner kick for Brazil to escape Lima with all three points. Facundo Torres came off the bench for Uruguay in the second half, but his team ended up losing 2-1 to Ecuador in its second World Cup qualifier of this month. In October, Peru will play Chile and Argentina, while Uruguay will face Colombia and Brazil.

Orlando Pride Sign Tori Hansen and Kaylie Collins to New Contracts

The Orlando Pride announced on Tuesday that they’ve signed defender Tori Hansen and goalkeeper Kaylie Collins to new contracts through the end of the 2024 NWSL season. The club also announced that both players will go on loan to Australia’s A-League Women, with Hansen going to Melbourne Victory FC and Collins to Western Sydney Wanderers FC for the upcoming season. Hansen started the first two Challenge Cup matches for the Pride this season, scoring a goal in the second match on May 10 against the Washington Spirit. Collins also made two appearances for the Pride this season, with one league start against NJ/NY Gotham FC on April 15 and the other in that Challenge Cup match against the Spirit on May 10. These loans will allow both players to focus on getting playing time to develop during the winter months in a competitive league ahead of the 2024 NWSL season.

USMNT Beats Oman in Friendly

In its second friendly of September, the United States Men’s National Team won 4-0 against Oman at Allianz Field. A goal from Folarin Balogun gave the Americans an early lead, with the team’s other three goals coming in the second half. The USMNT did well to secure its second shutout of September after beating Uzbekistan 3-0 this past Saturday. Tougher matches await though, as the USMNT is set to take on Germany and Ghana in another pair of friendlies next month.

USWNT Roster Announced for September Friendlies With South Africa

Twila Kilgore, who is serving as the interim head coach of the United States Women’s National Team, called up 27 players for training camp to prepare for its upcoming friendlies on Sept. 21 and Sept. 24 against South Africa. These will be Kilgore’s first two matches as the interim head coach while the U.S. Soccer Federation continues its search for a new head coach after Vlatko Andonovski resigned last month. Of those called up, 21 of the 23 players on the 2023 World Cup roster return to the squad, including goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, defender Naomi Girma, and forward Alex Morgan. Forward Mia Fishel, who was selected by the Pride in the 2022 NWSL Draft but chose to play for Tigres, received her first call up to the USWNT. Midfielder Kristie Mewis and forward Sophia Smith were not called up as they both are recovering from injuries. The first match at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati will be the final USWNT match for Julie Ertz, while the second match at Soldier Field in Chicago will be Megan Rapinoe’s last match for the USWNT.

Euro 2024 Qualifying Roundup

Qualifying for Euro 2024 in Germany continued on Tuesday with some intriguing matchups. Spain dominated Cyprus 6-0 and got two goals from Ferran Torres. With that win, Spain keeps pace with group leaders Scotland, which leads Group A with 15 points. Italy bounced back with a 2-1 win over Ukraine, with Davide Frattesi finding the back of the net twice. That win moves Italy to second in Group C while Ukraine moves to third due to goal differential. Marko Arnautovic’s two goals helped Austria beat Sweden 3-1 and his team is tied with Group F leaders Belgium with 13 points. Switzerland, Romania, and Israel all won their respective matches yesterday to keep Group I close. Switzerland leads the group with 14 points, while Romania is in second with 12, and Israel is on the outside looking in in third with 11.

There is plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.

Facundo Torres, Oscar Pareja, and Pedro Gallese Earn Recognition

Orlando City’s Facundo Torres was named to the latest MLS Team of the Matchday. Torres scored the lone goal for the Lions just before halftime in a win against FC Cincinnati this past Saturday. Torres has been in stellar form, scoring in the Lions last four matches. Oscar Pareja was also chosen as the coach for the MLS Team of the Matchday after snapping FC Cincinnati’s unbeaten streak at home this season. Goalkeeper Pedro Gallese made the bench for coming up with four saves in that match and earning his eighth clean sheet of the season.

Moises Tablante Up for MLS NEXT Pro Goal of the Matchday

Orlando City B midfielder Moises Tablante’s goal from this past weekend was nominated for MLS NEXT Pro Goal of the Matchday.

Tablante scored in the 74th minute for the Young Lions in OCB’s 6-3 loss to Crown Legacy FC this past Sunday. Tablante took on two defenders and delivered a fantastic strike towards the top right corner of the goal to give OCB its third goal in the match, and his fourth of the season.

Robin Fraser Out as Colorado Rapids Head Coach

The Colorado Rapids have parted ways with their head coach, Robin Fraser. The Rapids lost 2-0 to Real Salt Lake this past weekend, which was their fifth straight loss. The Rapids sit at the bottom of the Western Conference standings with 19 points. Fraser has coached the Rapids since 2019, leading the club to consecutive postseason appearances during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. In 2021, Fraser led the Rapids to their best regular season points total, topping the Western Conference with 61 points. Chris Little, who has been an assistant coach since 2021, will serve as the interim head coach.

Spain Fires Women’s National Team Manager Jorge Vilda

The Royal Spanish Football Federation has fired Jorge Vilda as manager of the women’s national team less than a month after Spain won the Women’s World Cup. Vilda had been the team’s since 2015 but had never won a knockout stage match at a major tournament prior to this year’s World Cup. Vilda has also been embroiled in controversy during his tenure, as 15 players rebelled against him a year ago and complained to the federation about his management style, conditions for the national team, and needs for a more professional environment. Vilda was also among those who applauded President Luis Rubiales when he refused to resign despite facing widespread criticism following his actions after kissing Jenni Hermoso during the award ceremony for winning Spain’s first Women’s World Cup. The federation appointed Montse Tome to replace Vilda, making her the first woman to coach Spain’s women’s team.

McGuire gave some insight into his performance with the Lions and said there is still room to improve his game.

“It definitely meant a lot for them [coaching staff] to have some trust in me, to play early in my career and early in my first season,” McGuire told SBI in an interview. “It was a big help and I have a good relationship with the coaches which is something that has really helped. I’m pleased with how the first season is going, but I feel like I have some more goals in me. I feel I still have some work to do.”

McGuire also discusses the challenges he faced while in college at Creighton and what it meant to him to win the MAC Hermann Trophy. He gave credit to his teammates for his quick adjustment to the league after college and said Orlando has what it takes to win the MLS Cup.

The U.S. Open Cup Semifinals Kick Off Tonight

The 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals are set to take place tonight. Inter Miami will take on FC Cincinnati at TQL Stadium. Miami went on a seven-match unbeaten run to win the Leagues Cup tournament. FC Cincinnati sits atop the MLS standings, but looks to rebound after losing 3-0 to the Columbus Crew this past weekend. The club returns to the semifinal round of the U.S. Open Cup for the first time since 2017, when it reached the semifinals as a United Soccer League club. Tonight’s other semifinal is between the Houston Dynamo and Real Salt Lake at Shell Energy Stadium. Houston crushed the Portland Timbers 5-0 on Sunday in league play and looks to build on that momentum. Real Salt Lake has done well in this year’s tournament, winning three times on the road. The winners will face off in the final on Sept. 27.

How is everyone doing so far this week? I’m doing well and staying busy and excited for tonight’s Leagues Cup Round of 32 matchup against Inter Miami. There is plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.

Orlando City Takes On Inter Miami Tonight in Leagues Cup

Orlando City will be on the road tonight as it takes on rival Inter Miami at DRV PNK Stadium in the Round of 32 of the Leagues Cup. Both teams won their respective groups to reach the knockout stages. Duncan McGuire has been in stellar form, scoring in his third straight match for the Lions against Santos Laguna last Saturday in a 3-2 victory. The Lions have gone unbeaten against Miami in six of the last seven matches across all competitions. The last time these two sides met was back on May 20, when the Lions defeated Miami 3-1 on the road. Inter Miami’s roster has changed since then, with the recent additions of Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. If Facundo Torres scores another goal he’ll be tied with Tesho Akindele for sixth on Orlando’s all-time scoring list. The winner of tonight’s match will move on to the Round of 16 to face either FC Dallas or Mazatlan.

Duncan McGuire Discusses His Rookie Season

Orlando City has a knack for selecting great forwards in the MLS SuperDraft, with McGuire as the latest example. The 22-year-old leads Orlando’s talented offense with 10 goals across all competitions and shows no signs of slowing down in his first year as a professional.

“I wasn’t thinking it was going to be some huge season. I was obviously hoping I’d get my chance, maybe score a goal or two, play in some games. But my teammates did a good job at helping me transition from the college game, teaching me the ropes about strategy, tactics. They worked with me from day one, helping me out and helped me feel like one of the guys from day one, so that was helpful on their part.

McGuire’s style of play is centered around keeping defenders busy to create space for himself and his teammates, and he’s still developing as the year goes on. He also spoke on his aspiration to play for the United States Men’s National Team to take part in the World Cup and Concacaf Gold Cup.

MLS Transfer Roundup

There was quite a bit of notable transfer news, as the MLS summer transfer window is set to close tonight. Atlanta United signed forward Jamal Thiare to a contract through the 2024 season. Thiare had previously played in Ligue 2 with Le Havre. The Houston Dynamo also made a move, signing attacking midfielder Sebastian Kowalczyk from Polish side Pogon Szczecin. Kowalczyk’s deal is through the 2024 season, with club options for 2025 and 2026. New York City FC added forward Julian Fernandez from Argentinian side Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield. Inter Miami also signed 19-year-old center back Tomas Aviles.

Bruce Arena Placed On Administrative Leave

Major League Soccer released a statement on Tuesday that New England Revolution Head Coach and Sporting Director Bruce Arena has been put on administrative leave while an investigation into alleged insensitive and inappropriate remarks takes place.

The New England Revolution are in second place in the Eastern Conference with 43 points. The club also released a statement that it takes these allegations seriously and will cooperate with the league throughout the investigation. The players were reportedly told this past Sunday that Arena would be absent from the club, but no reason was given. Curt Onalfo will reportedly serve as the interim sporting director, with Richie Williams as interim head coach while the investigation is ongoing.

The Houston Dynamo beat Santos Laguna in the penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw. The Dynamo now lead Orlando City’s group with three points after playing both of their games. The Lions will win the group if they beat Santos Laguna on Saturday or draw and win the penalty shootout. There is also a scenario where a shootout loss would propel the Lions through on tiebreakers. Inter Miami won 4-0 against Atlanta United, with both Lionel Messi and Robert Taylor scoring twice to send Miami into the knockout round. Mazatlan also booked its spot in the next round after beating FC Juarez in a penalty shootout to top its group. FC Dallas won 3-0 against Necaxa, with Eugene Ansah, Sebastian Lletget, and Jesus Ferreira finding the back of the net. There are seven Leagues Cup matches tonight, including CF Montreal facing D.C. United, the Union battling Queretaro, and San Luis taking on the New England Revolution.

MLS Transfer News

In another busy day of transfer moves in Major League Soccer, Toronto FC loaned forward Ayo Akinola to the San Jose Earthquakes for the remainder of the 2023 MLS season. Toronto will receive a 2023 international roster spot, while the Earthquakes will have an option to sign Akinola on a permanent transfer after his loan ends this season. Nashville SC acquired Sam Surridge from Nottingham Forest of the English Premier League on a Designated Player contract through 2026, with an option for the 2027 season. The Philadelphia Union are reportedly close to acquiring forward Tai Baribo from Wolfsberger.

Group A Up for Grabs in Women’s World Cup

There were some fairly surprising results at the Women’s World Cup on Tuesday. There was an upset as the Philippines defeated New Zealand 1-0, with a goal from Sarina Bolden to secure the win at Wellington Regional Stadium. This was the Philippines’ first win at the World Cup and kept the nation’s hopes alive to get to the knockout stage. Elsewhere in the group, Ada Hegerberg sustained a groin injury and wasn’t able to play for Norway in a scoreless draw with Switzerland. Norway remains at the bottom of the group with one point and still hasn’t scored a goal in the competition.

Orlando City Draws Houston Dynamo in Leagues Cup Opener, Wins Shootout

Orlando City began its Leagues Cup group play against the Houston Dynamo. The Lions fell behind after a highly questionable penalty kick call awarded to the visitors but battled back after the break to tie it and then won an extra point in the South 2 group’s standings by winning the post-draw penalty shootout, 5-4 at Exploria Stadium. Duncan McGuire scored the equalizer to tie the match at 1-1.

Ercan Kara, Rafael Santos, Robin Jansson, Antonio Carlos, and Facundo Torres all scored from the spot. Hector Herrera was the only player to miss his penalty for the Dynamo thanks to a big save from Pedro Gallese. Orlando City can qualify for the knockout stage if Santos Laguna beats Houston on Tuesday night. Orlando City’s next group-stage match will be on Saturday, July 29 against Santos Laguna.

There is plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.

Messiah Bright Named NWSL Player of the Week

Orlando Pride forward Messiah Bright was officially named National Women’s Soccer League Player of the Week, earning the honor for the first time in her young career.

Bright won the league voting on Monday, edging out NJ/NY Gotham FC’s Abby Smith for the award. She scored the lone goal in the Pride’s match this past weekend to defeat OL Reign for the club’s second consecutive win and presented problems for the visitors throughout her time on the pitch. This is also the second straight week that an Orlando Pride player won NWSL Player of the Week, with Julie Doyle claiming the honor last week.

USMNT Takes on Panama Tonight in Gold Cup Semifinal

The United States Men’s National Team will be in action tonight as it takes on Panama in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup semifinals. The match will be played at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, as the U.S. looks to book a spot in the final and continue its quest to repeat as Gold Cup champions. The USMNT will need to eliminate some of the sloppy play it displayed in its last match against Canada in the quarterfinals. The U.S. will need to put in a better performance tonight and not give Panama any confidence to stay in this match. If the USMNT can serve good crosses into the box on set pieces, it can lead to more scoring chances for the Americans. The winner will face either Mexico or Jamaica in the Gold Cup final on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

USWNT Prepares for World Cup Clash With Vietnam

After a 2-0 win over Wales, the United States Women’s National Team will now get ready for its first World Cup match against Vietnam on July 21. Just Women’s Sports shared a scouting report on Vietnam, along with what we should keep an eye on for the match. Huynh Nhu is Vietnam’s top player, with 67 goals in 103 appearances for her country. Vietnam performed well against Germany last month and showed its attacking power despite losing 2-1 in a friendly. Vietnam did lose its next match 2-0 to New Zealand and has one more friendly against Spain tomorrow before it faces the U.S. These two sides have never played against each other before, and the USWNT will need to stay focused to avoid any costly mistakes.
